Église Notre Dame de la Nativité
Vanxains
Consecrated in 1147 and listed as a Historic Monument in 1908, it was the seat of the former archpriesthood of La Double, which included 41 parishes until the Revolution. Very important for a rural church, Notre Dame de la Nativité has constantly adapted to architectural changes over the centuries.
Dome, furnishings and objects: carved walnut altarpiece from the 17th century, paintings, carved capitals including an “Ouroboros” (upside-down monster), Obit (Latin inscription from the 13th century, unique in the Dordogne), baroque organ… The Romanesque style was extensively altered and enlarged in the 16th century. During the Wars of Religion, the building was raised to create defence and shelter chambers above the vaults. Concerts and guided tours by appointment are organised during the summer and on the European Heritage Days.
