Church of Notre Dame de l’Assomption
La Roche-Chalais
Jean Hérier-Fonclaire, mayor of the commune from 1860 to 1870, had the dilapidated old wooden church razed to the ground and the present neo-Gothic church rebuilt between 1868 and 1871.
In 1883, a second bell was added to the steeple (the first had been cast in 1813), and the Count of Saint-Saud commissioned the renowned Joseph Merklin to build the organ, which he owned until 1951. Under Fernand Lapeyre’s municipal mandate, a three-dial clock was added to the bell tower in 1898.
Although the church is not listed as a historic monument, the lectern has been classified as a historic object since 1975. The music stand features two confronting eagles with crossed heads (the eagles of Saint John and Saint Luke with cherubs and acanthus leaves); it dates from the 17th century, with the base and foot from the 19th century.
