La Motte de Vaudu

La roche-chalais

The motte de Vaudu, located on the edge of the Gironde, is a mound of earth 15 m high and 60 m wide, bordered by a crescent of earth. Legend has it that Duke Waifre or Duke of Aquitaine was buried here in 770. This feudal mound is thought to have been built as an observation post over the Angoumois, Périgord and Bordeaux regions.

You can walk around the motte and admire the panorama. Educational panels on site explain the history of the site.
