Église Sainte-Marie de Bourg-des-Maisons
Bourg-des-maisons
<11th-century fortified church with a single nave vaulted by two domes.
17th century frescoes on pillars and walls.
The building was listed as a historic monument in 1913 (M.H).
The church is mentioned in 1143 as a dependency of the Benedictine abbey of Sarlat. In 1169 it was given to the abbey of Saint-Cybard d’Angoulême by Jean d’Asside, bishop of Périgueux. At the time, it depended on the priory of Cercles and was cited as Ecclesia Sancta-Mariae de Maisos. In 1468, it was cited as Ecclesia S. Bartholomoei de Bourg de Maisons in a charter in the cartulary of the Saint-Cybard abbey.
It was probably during the Hundred Years’ War that a defensive chamber was built above the vaults of the church.
The bell tower was destroyed by lightning in 1897 and immediately rebuilt.
