Church of Notre Dame de l’Assomption La Roche-Chalais
La roche-chalais
Jean Hérier-Fonclaire, mayor of the commune from 1860 to 1870, had the dilapidated old wooden church demolished and the current neo-Gothic church rebuilt between 1868 and 1871.
In 1883, a second bell was added to the bell tower (the first had been cast in 1813).
In 1883, a second bell was added to the steeple (the first was cast in 1813); the Count of Saint-Saud commissioned the renowned Joseph Merklin to build the organ, which he owned until 1951. Under the municipal mandate of Fernand Lapeyre, a three-dial clock was added to the bell tower in 1898.
Although the church is not listed as a historic monument, the lectern has been classified as a historic object since 1975; the music stand features two confronting eagles with crossed heads (the eagles of St John and St Luke with cherubs and acanthus leaves); it dates from the 17th century, with the base and foot from the 19th.
It is also listed as a historic monument.
